The Vignette Project is a concept created by filmmakers in Springfield, Missouri following the 2010 SATO48 challenge. The idea is that movie makers may create short films with a common narrative that can be compiled in a feature length DVD for presentation to festivals and further distribution.
Additionally, DVDs will be packaged and made available from a production house at wholesale prices (typically $1 to $1.70 each) to vignette contributors for their own sales and promotions.
The vignette creators shall extend rights to Vignette Project organizers should they chose to be on the feature DVD as the collective work becomes property of the Vignette Project organizers. The idea is that DVD contributors stand to gain a great deal of notoriety and exposure from the DVD and that The Vignette Project must secure additional rights to the vignettes in order to successfully place features with distributors. All rights relating to vignettes that filmmakers chose not to place on the DVD, or those that are not selected by Vignette Project organizers for placement on the DVD, remain with the filmmaker/s. ALL vignettes will, however, be screened at a local venue.
The Vignette Project is not a challenge, nor is it a contest. It is a way for filmmakers to showcase their talent through collective promotions. The idea is that collectively we have a greater reach than individually.
There are other benefits from the use of vignettes to create a feature. One is the ease of production. Another is the value which comes from having many different artistic visions and perspectives on the material with several individual contributors.
Note: Although we plan to showcase all films at a local theater, not all shorts are guaranteed to make it onto the final DVD if we have more submissions than required for a feature-length project. Presently we are still in need of submissions for Vignette Project 1.
We officially invite all filmmakers and SATO48 contributors to join us in our first project. The topic of our first project is urban legends. There is no deadline for the urban legends project. Entries will be screened as soon as we have at least one hour of material. We will have the DVD available at that time.
We recommend the graphic publication, The Big Book of Urban Legends, which contains over 200 well known urban legends in (story boarded!) comic book form. Some are funny. Some are scary. Filmmakers are asked to notify The Vignette Project in regard to which story they are going to select so that no two filmmakers cover the same story. That filmmaker must complete the chosen vignette within 3 weeks of selecting the urban legend or the story becomes available to other filmmakers to select. The Big Book of Urban Legends is currently available on Amazon.com for $1.06. Urban legends need not be selected from this book but should be popular legends that have become part of our collective cultural consciousness. Filmmakers selecting legends from the "Big Book" should be sure not to copy the narrative in the stories but may loosely follow it.
Vignettes should be between 1 and 10 minutes in length and should be no more graphic than a PG-13 rating. Other than the title of the vignette no other information or text should appear on screen until after the end. It is also not necessary to title the vignette. Please do not forget to include credits following the vignette or include them in hard copy along with the data DVD-R.
We are also currently working to secure a name actor to function as the "host" of the DVD feature.
